Introduction to Facelift

When you come to Soma Plastic Surgery in the Orlando and Lake Mary area, we will be more than happy to assess your face and provide an expert solution to meet your aesthetic desires. Please continue reading below to learn more about our Facelift surgery.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift is a very generic term used to describe a highly variable surgical procedure used in facial cosmetic surgery to decrease the signs of aging.

There are multiple methods used to reverse the effects and signs of aging on the face. These techniques depend on the areas of facial aging, skin condition, and the extent of descent (sag) in the various facial tissues, soft tissues, and fat. Premature facial aging is commonly caused by excess sun exposure, smoking, and genetics.

Facelifts are ideal for improving the contour of the jawline and cheeks and correcting sagging skin in the neck. The degree of facial aging including skin quality, the patient’s areas of concern, and the extent of cheek descent all factor into the choice of your facelift technique.

What are the Benefits of a Facelift?

Our patients who struggle with considerable sagging in the mid-face, or are looking to address the visible signs of the aging process in their lower face have seen the following benefits from their Facelift in Orlando:

  • Creates a more contoured jawline
  • Improves the appearance of the nasolabial folds
  • Natural-looking results
  • Reduces and can eliminate deep creases
  • Restores and lifts cheeks
  • Tightens up loose skin

Deep Plane Facelift

A Deep Plane Facelift requires the dissection of the facial plane just below the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) of the midface. By placing tension at strategic points of your face, Dr. Papanicolaou creates tension-free skin with long-lasting results.

This technique allows for the focused removal of certain key facial retaining ligaments and maximizes mobilization of the superficial soft tissue, tightens the underlying muscle to lift the deeper tissues, and even addresses buccal fat that contributes to jowling.

When performed properly, a deep plane facelift can produce dramatic and sustainable facial rejuvenation that results in the midface and the lower portion of your face.

Classic Facelift

A Classic or Full Facelift is a surgical procedure that involves lifting and tightening the sagging skin of the face and neck, along with the underlying facial muscles. Dr. Papanicolaou uses advanced techniques to create natural-looking results and minimize scarring. Patients should have a moderate amount of excess skin to be the most effective.

Our full facelift technique is an outpatient procedure generally performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. It’s common for facelift procedures to also include a neck lift.

Mini-Facelift

Also called a Limited Incision Facelift, this cosmetic surgery is a variation of the full facelift, but is a less invasive alternative. Our mini-facelift Orlando patients can address mild-to-moderate signs of aging but may not require a full facelift to achieve that.

Patients who get a mini-facelift procedure are generally younger with less loose skin, which leads to less facial skin removal. Your mini-facelift incisions will be discreet and hidden in the natural creases of your skin. A mini-facelift typically involves a quicker recovery time than a traditional facelift and can be done using local anesthesia.

A Mini-facelift cost in the Orlando area is dependent on numerous factors. The best way to learn the price of your procedure is to come in for a consultation.

Who are the Best Candidates for a Facelift procedure?

At our practice, we believe that the best candidates for a Facelift are those with some of the following characteristics:

  • Deep creases between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)
  • Facial sagging along the jawline
  • Midface (cheek) sagging with deep creases and bags under the eyes
  • Non- Smokers
  • Overall Healthy Individuals
  • Sagging excess neck skin and neck fat deposits
  • Skin creases and wrinkling

We encourage any potential candidates to have a positive attitude throughout the procedure and recovery time, maintain realistic expectations, and be in overall good health.

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting an Orlando Facelift is to schedule a consultation at Soma Plastic Surgery. When you come in for your appointment, you’ll meet with Dr. Papanicolaou, who will evaluate your unique needs, goals, and your unique facial structure and features. He will also review your medical history – including your current medications and whether or not you have high blood pressure – and discuss previous surgeries (if any) to ensure you are a good candidate for facial surgery, and if not, help you find a better option. Dr. Papanicolaou will also perform a physical examination of your unique facial features, including skin quality, skin laxity, soft tissue, sagging cheeks, jowls, and neck muscles.

Dr. Papanicolaou will discuss what a surgical facelift involves, as well as the pros and cons of the individual surgical techniques. Dr. Papanicolaou will also show you the various facelift incisions and where your surgical scars will be placed. The aesthetic goal is to give you a youthful contour and a rejuvenated appearance while avoiding that “pulled look”.

After creating your procedure plan, we will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare for your surgery, which may include stopping certain medications in the days leading up to the procedure. Skin loses elasticity with sun exposure which can negatively affect your facelift, so you will be advised to avoid sun exposure and increase skin moisturizing to smooth the lines and wrinkles as much as possible before your facelift.

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

On the day of your Facelift in Orlando, you will be greeted by Dr. Papanicolaou who will go over the steps of your plan. Once the two of you are ready, we will administer your general anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery.

Dr. Papanicolaou will begin by making incisions in front and behind the ear. These incisions are well-hidden thanks to your natural creases and hair’s ability to camouflage any facial scarring. Next, he will carefully lift the skin to address the underlying facial muscle. Dr. Papanicolaou will use the appropriate surgical technique for you based on your initial consultation. After tightening the muscular layers under lax skin, the loose skin will be pulled upward and Dr. Papanicolaou will remove any excess skin, and use fine sutures to close up your skin.

Facelift surgery generally takes around two to four hours to complete, but will depend on the extent of the procedure.

Facelift Recovery

After a facelift, patients will usually need about a week to two weeks off from work and other regular activities. There will likely be mild bruising and swelling for the first few days, which can be relieved with cold compresses to the face as well as an elevation of the head. Any operation around the eye can lead to swelling and irritation. The swelling and irritation are alleviated with gel ice masks and hydrating eye drops for the first week after the operation.
