What is a Tummy Tuck?

Also referred to as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that is used to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. This treatment can even be used to help restore muscles that have been weakened or separated from childbirth or injury.

The idea that a protruding abdomen is caused by reckless weight gain alone is a myth. A number of factors can contribute to how large an individual’s’ stomach is, including their age and family history. Pregnancy and previous surgeries can also have an impact. An abdominoplasty offers an effective way to get rid of this fat and get the lean body that they’ve always wanted.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

The amount of time it takes to recover from a patient’s tummy tuck procedure depends on each patient’s individual health. After every tummy tuck procedure, a compression garment is required to be worn for 4-6 weeks after treatment. Patients should avoid any kind of strenuous activity for six weeks. Scarring from surgery can take up to a year to resolve itself fully, with some degree of visible scarring usually remaining.

While thousands of tummy tuck procedures are performed safely every year, complications as a result of surgery are possible. These complications could include:

  • Infection

  • Scar formation

  • Fluid collection

Am I a Candidate?

Suitable candidates for tummy tucks must be non-smokers, physically healthy, and unhappy with the appearance of their abdomens. It’s also important that interested individuals go into the procedure with realistic expectations, and are already at or near their ideal body weight.

Before undergoing a tummy tuck, patients will need to undergo a consultation appointment with Dr. Papanicolaou. During this appointment, Dr. Papanicolaou listens to each patient’s individual concerns and takes into account their aesthetic goals, current state of health, and medical history in order to decide if a tummy tuck is right for them.

If you’re interested in undergoing a tummy tuck procedure in the Heathrow, Sanford, Lake Monroe, or Lake Mary areas, we can help! Contact Soma Plastic Surgery today to schedule a consultation appointment.
