What Is Botox?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the first and only treatment FDA-approved to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet and forehead lines look better in adults. So you look like you, only with less noticeable facial lines.

It’s a quick 10-minute treatment with minimal downtime. You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with results lasting up to 4 months for moderate to severe frown lines.

How does Botox work?

A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother.

What can Botox do for me?

BOTOX® Cosmetic works on wrinkles and lines that are caused by common facial expressions like frowning and smiling. It can also help people who suffer from excessive sweating. The injectable won’t work on wrinkles that are caused by loss of facial volume or skin laxity.

Lines in Between Brows (Also Called Glabella or Frown Lines):

The lines in between the brows can become very deep. In some people, BOTOX® Cosmetic can reduce the appearance of these lines. In others, the treatment may be able to eliminate the lines entirely.

Lines Around the Eyes (Also Known as Crow's Feet):

Facial muscle movements can cause lines to form between your eyes and crow’s feet to appear at the corners of your eyes. BOTOX® can give you younger, brighter-looking eyes by reducing the appearance of these lines.

Underarm Sweating (Also Known as Hyperhidrosis):

The Florida heat is blistering at times, and many people find themselves sweating excessively. This kind of problem can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, and unattractive. Sometimes it can even limit your clothing choices. This is a problem that BOTOX® Cosmetic can help to fix.

Injecting BOTOX® into the sweat glands under your arms will dramatically reduce the amount of sweat they produce, and it works in just a few days! With BOTOX®, you can have the freedom and confidence to enjoy the outdoors whenever you want, even when the Florida heat is at its height.

How much Botox will I need?

BOTOX® treatments are given in units. For any given area, the number of units needed varies, depending on the strength of your facial muscles and the thickness of your skin. This means that men often need more units than women for similar levels of treatment.

On average, you can expect to need 12 to 24 units per area in the most common areas:

  • Forehead

  • Glabella (in between the brows)

  • Crow’s feet

What can I expect after my Botox treatment?

Some patients receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic report the injections feel like a pinch. You may begin to notice a visible smoothing of frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines within 24 to 48 hours, with results lasting up to 4 months for moderate to severe frown lines in adults.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not a permanent treatment. If you discontinue treatment the moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet and forehead lines will gradually return.

Do you have to be a certain age to start Botox?

It's not your age that determines when BOTOX® Cosmetic is right for you, it's the severity of your lines. In fact, 64% of plastic surgeons report seeing a rise in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments for patients in their early 30’s.

The truth is, everyone's lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time, to reduction of collagen, to genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Whenever your lines start to bother you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Papanicolaou. He will help you determine if treatment is right for you.
