Introduction to Breast Lift

Sagging breasts are a common and natural occurrence that affects many women. Although their breast volume may not have changed, the loss of a firmer appearance resulting in drooping and sagging can be a cause for concern in many women. Some women may see more aggressive changes than others, but no matter the degree of breast sagging, most female patients will want to correct this appearance with Breast Lift surgery. At Soma Plastic Surgery, our very own Dr. George Papanicolalou is a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon who uses his artistic eye and abilities to help his patients feel more confident in their busts. To learn more about this breast surgery, please keep reading below.

What is a Breast Lift?

A Breast Lift (mastopexy) is a cosmetic surgery that enhances, re-contours, and elevates breasts that have begun to sag due to age, genetics, child-bearing, nursing, significant weight loss or gain, and gravity. Each woman is unique, and Dr. Papanicolaou may combine your procedure with breast augmentation to lift the patients’ breasts and help them achieve their aesthetic goals.

This treatment will tighten sagging tissue, and drooping breasts (breast ptosis), and remove excess skin for a more youthful position. Most women will also use this treatment to fix nipples that point downward for a more youthful appearance.

Please keep in mind that this treatment will not affect your breast size. If your breasts lack volume or firmness, inserting either a saline or silicone breast implant, can be done during the breast lift procedure, resulting in perkier, firm breasts. Dr. Papanicolaou uses the safest and newest techniques to deliver outstanding results with minimal scarring.

What are the Benefits of a Breast Lift?

Women notice dramatic improvements in breast shape and position after breast lift surgery, making their breasts appear more youthful and proportionate. Benefits from this procedure can include:

  • Enhanced and youthful breast shape after weight loss
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Improved self-image
  • Raised, firmer breasts
  • Reduces back and shoulder pain
  • Rejuvenated, youthful breasts
  • Rounder, perkier shape

Who are the Best Candidates for a Breast Lift Procedure?

If you are physically healthy and have realistic expectations, you will be a good candidate for breast enhancement. The best results are achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Although breasts of any size can be lifted, the results of a breast lift will not last as long in women with very heavy breasts as in women with smaller breasts.

You may wish to have a breast reduction with your breast lift if heavy breasts are a concern for you, particularly if your bra straps dig into your shoulders or if you are experiencing back pain due to very heavy breasts.

Keep in mind that if you plan to have more children, pregnancy and nursing can “undo” the results of a breast lift. While you will still be able to nurse a baby after a breast lift, both pregnancy and nursing are likely to stretch the breast tissue again, leaving you with the same problem. For that reason, we advise women to wait until they have finished having children before having a breast lift procedure.

What’s the First Step?

Your first step in getting a Breast Lift surgery in Orlando or Lake Mary is to schedule your consultation. When you come into our practice nearest you, you’ll be able to meet with Dr. George Papanicolaou and ask him any questions you may have, learn more about the breast lift procedure, discuss your options, and have a comprehensive breast evaluation. He will ask you questions about your medical history, so please be open and honest with Dr. Papanicolaou to avoid any unnecessary risks.

Once you and Dr. Papanicolaou feel that Breast Lift surgery is the best solution for your aesthetic needs, he will make your surgical plan. With your surgical plan, our Patient Coordinator will book your surgery and provide you with pre and postoperative instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Lift Surgery

On the day of your breast lift surgery at Soma Plastic Surgery, you will arrive at our surgical clinic and you will be welcomed by our dedicated team. Dr. Papanicolaou will discuss the elements of your surgery and answer any final questions before you begin.

Anesthesia will be administered to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery. Dr. Papanicolaou’s meticulous expertise will come to life as he skillfully performs the Breast Lift, sculpting and reshaping your breasts to restore youthful contours and symmetry. He will make incisions in the natural crease of your breasts.

The surgery’s duration may vary depending on individual factors, but you can expect the procedure to be completed within a reasonable timeframe. Following the surgery, a period of recovery and rest will be essential as you awaken to a new chapter.

Breast Lift Recovery

Since Mastopexy is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, you will be able to return home once Dr. Papanicolaou releases you from our recovery room. We recommend having a friend or relative available to provide you with a ride home.

It can take up to 24 hours to completely recover from the effects of the anesthesia, so it’s also recommended to have a qualified adult available to assist you around the house for the first week. Patients are typically advised to wear the support bra 24/7 for several weeks to help heal.

After the procedure, you can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising around your breasts. Dr. Papanicolaou can prescribe some temporary pain medication to help alleviate any pain during your initial recovery. You may feel tingling or numbness around the incisions, especially around the areola because there are a lot of nerve endings in that area. Over time, your incisions will heal and the swelling will gradually subside, as well as any visible scarring.

The recovery time varies based on several factors, such as the type of surgery and incisions. You must avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity, or any activity that causes pain or discomfort. We will provide you with instructions on how to stay comfortable during recovery and how to achieve optimal results.

While you will see some improvements immediately, most patients will require six weeks or more to see the most dramatic improvement in their breast lift results. It is important to remember that this procedure may impact your ability to breastfeed.
