What Are Dermal Fillers?
Injectable fillers for the face, also known as dermal fillers, are formulated to address common signs of aging, such as wrinkles, folds and areas that appear to be sunken. They produce a fuller, softer, more attractive appearance that can last for several months.
What are the benefits of Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are yet another type of non-surgical cosmetic procedure with a minimum downtime, addressing facial conditions due to natural aging process. As we age, our faces naturally lose the underlying fat and the skin starts to stretch out, resulting in not just deeper wrinkles and folds, but sunken and hollow appearance. FDA-approved dermal fillers injected into the cheeks and other areas aid in diminishing facial lines and folds and restoring volume and fullness to the face. Dermal fillers can also be used as lip injections to plump thin lips. Results from facial fillers vary, depending on the type of filler used, the facial area to be treated, and, of course, the skill of the injecting physician.
Where can Dermal Fillers be used?
Facial fillers may be used to treat:
-
Nasolabial folds (deep wrinkles from the corners of the nose to the mouth) / parentheses / smile lines
-
Under-eye circles
-
Hollowed areas of the face, such as sunken cheeks
-
Marionette lines
-
Volume loss in the chin and jaw area
-
Thin lips and Vertical Lip Lines (aka smoker’s lines or pucker lines)
What Dermal Fillers are available at Soma Plastic Surgery?
There are a variety of brands and different formulations of dermal fillers and lip injections on the market. At Soma Plastic Surgery, we offer multiple types of facial fillers. These are some of our most popular fillers used:
Juvederm Ultra Plus
Often called the “natural filler” since it is made up of hyaluronic acid, a natural component of human skin, Juvederm Ultra Plus replaces volume, fills in, and smooths facial wrinkles and folds. It can effectively correct smile lines, marionette lines, chin wrinkles, and is also used as a lip injection for thin lips. Approved by FDA to last up to 1 year.
The first FDA-approved dermal filler to treat volume loss in the cheek area and the only filler proven to last up to 2 years, Juvederm Voluma XC is a non-surgical and long-lasting cheek lift, resulting in enhanced contour and a fuller, youthful face with minimal downtime.
The first and only hyaluronic acid dermal filler for the treatment of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds that is proven to last up to 18 months. Essentially, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, but with long-lasting results.
Exclusively designed for the treatment of thin lips and vertical lip lines; the first and only dermal filler proven to increase lip fullness and soften the appearance of vertical lip lines for up to 1 year. The Juvederm lip injection produces instant and natural looking results.
Radiesse is a calcium-based long-term dermal filler that can last up to a year. Calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel are injected into the skin. Once injected, Radiesse works below the skin’s surface to stimulate the production of your own collagen, which not only fills in wrinkles and folds but replenishes lost volume due to aging. It is recommended for moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles such as smile lines, marionette lines, and sunken cheeks.
These dermal fillers are sometimes used in conjunction with Botox to achieve optimal rejuvenation results. See below for more information on this technique, which is known as the “liquid facelift” procedure.
What’s the Difference Between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers?
Both BOTOX® and dermal fillers help to reduce wrinkles, but they work differently. BOTOX® is a toxin that minimizes the appearance of wrinkles by blocking muscle activity. When a muscle doesn’t contract, it doesn’t affect the skin to form wrinkles.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, fill spaces in different skin layers, correcting wrinkles by leveling the skin’s surface from the beneath the epidermis. Injectable fillers can fill wrinkles, soften creases and give flat, thin lips more volume.
